Pacifica, CA

Pacifica, CA (minutes south of San Francisco)
Sharp Park Golf Course

Dr. Alister MacKenzie original design? Check! FOR $30?!?!?!  Insane...
Anyone visiting the Bay Area for golf, this is a must play for a value and to have a lot of fun for a tiny price.  This golf course has great history and an amazing lay out.

The condition of the course is by no means great, or even close to average.  This course has no fairway bunkers, which is interesting because MacKenzie typically uses fairway bunkers to frame his fairways and add an element of illusion.  However at Sharp Park the trees that line the fairway are enough, as there is virtually no rough.

None the less, I would definitely recommend anyone who enjoys a fun round of golf with fun loving golfers all around them.

The fairways are not as well kept as most MacKenzie designs are, but as a municipal course with no funds to retrofit the drainage they do all they can to make it the best surface possible.  The rough does not hardly exist.  And the greens, with the same difficult drainage problems, and not being able to update does not allow the grounds crew to cut the greens to be rolling even at an 8 on the STIMP.
The first tee box, just steps away from the clubhouse, which is still the ORIGINAL clubhouse when the course was built.

From the first fairway you can see to other holes easily.  This is the 10th green next to the first tee.

More views of the rest of the golf course still from the first fairway. The way old classic courses were designed.  Love it!

The first green with an intimidating bunker... which should not be in play as the front of the green is still 15 yards farther.

Still on the course are the old tee box markers.  Classic design.
What I wouldn't give to have one of these detailed and in my home.

Hole 2 going back towards the clubhouse.

The second green.  Walked out the depth... 20 paces.
Average greens are smaller than Pebble easily.
If you hit greens here, you can hit them anywhere.

The par 5 third is a little more intimidating from the right side... It's a different world from the left side of the fairway.

Looking back down the fairway of the third hole from the fourth tee box.

Your fist par 3 on the golf course is an uphill battle.

A blind green, and that false front is more than intimidating.
The two tier tiny green makes for a tough test.

The short little par 3 of 90 yards or so.
Mind you... The gap between the trees on the left and right is actually less than the width of the green.

Hole 12 par 3 through the reeds that house the endangered frogs to the golf course.

A view from 13 fairway back to 11 green.

If you decided to pop your head out over 16 green you'll see the beautiful Pacific Ocean and numerous people walking along the walkway.

You'll also see this sign as you re-enter the course... Busted.

And here the green of 16.  One of the most fun greens I think because of the oceanside elements.

Here is the final hole of the course.  A fair and fun par 5...
and again the left side of the fairway is more favorable than the right.

An awesome tournament they held to save Sharp Park Golf Course.
Please play as often as possible to help save the game of golf for those who are looking to play an original
Alister MacKenzie design without paying an arm and a leg.

El Grano De Oro

This mexican food is pretty good.  The price matches Sharp Park Golf Course to perfection.
$6 burritos are a must have.  $3 quesodillas are the other must have if you have a smaller appetite.
It is mildly hard to find however.  If you exit the course it is only a 5 minute drive.
